Items

Items are weapons, trinkets, or helpful materials that players collect to help them on their journey. Unlike an RPG video game, in a pen and paper RPG, the item usefulness and utility is only limited by imagination of the players. In the case of kids, their imagination can run wild if the imagination is not limited. Try not to limit this imagination -- build and encourage it! Some of these examples that I've seen in my playthroughs with young kids are:

  • The rock can be used to throw at enemies, break open to find gold, or even fed to someone!

  • A healing potion can be used to heal your adventurer as well as heal other people!

  • A cloud puff can be used to prevent fall damage, float on top of water, or feed characters in the game!

As you see, the possibilities are endless. Again, try really hard not to limit kid's imagination by saying ,"You cannot do that." Roll with the punches and make up something funny! The list of items are below, however, feel free to come up with your own and add them to the game. It's especially fun to modify and adapt the game to your kid's liking! Any item -- normal or unique (explained below) shows up in the adventurer's inventory.
